There are signs throughout the movie that this is true. Louise knows that the outcome of this will be Hannah's death 12 years later, and that it also follows that Ian will leave her in the future when she tells him she knew Hannah was destined to die even before she was born. The aliens don't see time in linear terms, and having learned their language, Louise can also see things that happen in the future in the same way they do – including her new relationship with Ian, who will go on to be the father of her baby Hannah. they are visions of what will happen in the future. The twist that comes late in the movie is Louise realises after this last encounter with the aliens that the memories she has had – the scenes we have seen throughout of Louise with her late daughter Hannah that we assumed were flashbacks – aren't memories or flashbacks at all.
